Moshe Shamir\u2019s novel He Walked Through the Fields, integrating into the familiar narrative a turn in the plot that stems from Abady\u2019s own politics of identity \u2013 as a Sabra, a Jew, an Israeli, a Syrian, an Egyptian and an Arab.<br \/>The exhibition features five paintings from the series \u201cBack to the Levant\u201d The figures recurring in these paintings are based on portraits of Assi Dayan and Iris Yotvat, who starred in the film made after Shamir\u2019s book. First published in1947, the novel quickly became a cornerstone of modern Israeli mythology. The plot captures the contrast-filled lives of Uri and Mika and tells their love story, which comes to a tragic and heroic end. Uri, the first child born on his kibbutz, is confident and committed to his country; the plot reveals his deliberations and inner torment, which he overcomes when his conscience drives him to embark on various military missions, despite Mika\u2019s resistance. Mika stands out in the film as the foreigner who came from \u201cthere,\u201d an allusion to Poland, and symbolizes the survivors of the Holocaust, having managed to escape and arrive in pre-state Israel as part of the group of \u201cTeheran Children.\u201d Abady added to the image of Mika\/Yotvat, who gazes with admiration at Uri\/Dayan, an inscription that spells out the word \u201cSabra\u201d in Arabic. This supplement transforms what has been engraved, in collective Israeli memory, as the ideal cinematic representation of the handsome Sabra, projecting it instead onto the figure of Mika, who is perceived as an outsider. The Arabic scripts further enhances this sense of estrangement, while undermining the binary Israeli concepts articulated in the novel: a Sabra is a native-born Israeli who must speak, think and even die in Hebrew for the sake of his country. The word \u201cSabra\u201d is imbued with different meanings, associated with various cultural fields: in Arabic, sabr means \u201cpatience,\u201d and is the source of the local name given to the prickly-pear plant. In English, \u201cSabra\u201d is a term used to refer to native Israelis, who are likened to the prickly-pear fruit \u2013 thorny on the outside and sweet on the inside. \u201cSabra\u201d was also the name of a liquor produced by the Carmel Wineries, which was marketed abroad as an emblem of Israeli identity, much like the prickly pear. At the same time, the word \u201cSabra\u201d also alludes to the events in Sabra and Shatila, which cast a long shadow on the moral Israel\u2019s military conduct during the First War in Lebnon, and leading to a collective act of self-reckoning.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The location of the figures upon round, gilded panels bespeaks Abady\u2019s stance concerning Israeli art during the years defined by \u201cthe poverty of matter,\u201d a period that apotheosized the use of \u201clow\u201d materials. According to the artist, this gilded backdrop presents the figures as Christian icons, while alluding to \u201cArab taste\u201d \u2013 a pejorative Israeli expression used to indicate over-ornateness. The unusual combination of bourgeois and pioneering elements, together with the addition of Arabic, serves to undermine stereotypical representations, while blurring the clearly defined identities of the characters.<br \/>Abady is not the first artist to refer to Shamir\u2019s historical novel and to the figure of the heroic Sabra represented by the young Assi Dayan, a member of the local Israeli nobility. Abady is no doubt familiar with Igael Tumarkin\u2019s 1967 work on the same theme, while offering an artistic alternative to the latter\u2019s crude, subversive sculpture, in which the rise and fall of the Israeli dream are represented by a figure composed of ammunition parts, whose lowered pants expose its genitals.<br \/>In contrast to Tumarkin, Abady does not represent the rupture of the Israeli dream, but rather seeks some form of normalization vis-\u00e0-vis the country\u2019s Arabs, as he knew them during his childhood in Jerusalem.<br \/>He especially recalls his father\u2019s stories about relatives who visited pre-state Israel on a train from Cairo, and through the Arabic words interspersed in his parents\u2019 conversations and frequently heard on the streets of Jerusalem.
