represents intoxication, loss of control, wildness, ecstasy and catharsis. This patron of harvesters and an art-historical symbol of release and awakening serves as a central trope in Assi Meshullam\u2019s exhibition\u00a0<strong>All of the Gifts<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Dionysus\u2019 attributes \u2013 grapes and a mask \u2013 intervene in the sculptures on display. Meshullam uses them to create a pseudo-archaeological world based on \u201cDionysian action,\u201d which is contrasted, in philosophy, with \u201cApollonian actions\u201d shaped by the moderation and refinement of emotions and urges. The exhibition features hybrid creatures, statuettes, plaques and objects, alongside the\u00a0<strong>Book of Fables<\/strong>, written by Meshulam. The book and works were created together as a single, interrelated body of works, especially for this exhibition.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The sculpted figure carrying an amphora, sheaves of wheat and ivy vines points to the resemblance between the Dionysian aspects of the exhibition and the agricultural character of the Jewish holidays Shavuot and Sukkot. Especially notable is the connection between the Dionysian processions and the procession of\u00a0<em>lulavim<\/em>\u00a0(palm fronds) on Sukkot, as well as the procession of new seasonal fruit held on Shavuot, which dates back to the time of the Temple in Jerusalem.\u00a0 Jewish and Dionysian spring processions both involved offerings of fruit and vegetables, and were led by a bull whose horns were decorated with gold and\u00a0olive leaves. The Sukkot procession featured the Four Species of plants, most notable of which was the\u00a0<em>lulav<\/em>. One can note its resemblance to the thyrsus, a staff intertwined with ivy vines and grape leaves with a pine cone at its tip, which was carried by the participants in the Dionysian procession.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to the cult of Dionysus, the masks worn by the sculpted figures are also related to the ancient and harrowing ritual of sacrificing children to the god Moloch, which took place at a ritual site in the Phoenician colony of Carthage (modern-day Tunisia). Findings at this site include masks and inscriptions addressed to the gods to whom the children were sacrificed: \u201cFor he heard his voice and blessed him.\u201d<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The theme of disguise, which is embodied by the masks, is also related to the work process practiced by Meshullam, who creates his sculptures out of Barbie and Ken dolls,\u00a0 plastic scarecrows of animals and birds, and faux-stone garden sculptures. The Barbie dolls, which Meshullam has transformed into female figurines like those found in areas identified with the ancient Kingdoms of Israel and Judaea, blur the boundaries between the categories of kitsch and \u201clow,\u201d inferior objects, and between objects emblematic of the divine, fertility, luck and blessings. In this manner, Meshullam offers an alternative, personal form of religiosity, which draws on ancient archetypes. The heart of the matter, for him, is the counter between family and everyday routines and between ceremonial, ritual events.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0<strong>Book of Fables<\/strong>\u00a0is written in a canonical style reminiscent of the biblical parables, the parables of Jesus in the New Testament, and even Aesop\u2019s Fables. They revolve around people, animals and birds, and are told in a fantastic style, including: the Parable of the\u00a0Spiders, the Parable of the Hole and the Parable of the Blind Child, represented in the exhibition by a sculpture whose eyes roll upwards so that its gaze seems to be directed inwards.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In contrast to biblical parables, the moral message is not obvious, and visitors are invited to gather in the gallery space and discuss the meaning of Meshullam\u2019s fables. In 2005, Meshullam wrote\u00a0<strong>Your Shepherd<\/strong>, another book in which he drew a connection between the intellect and animal urges, followed by an exegesis. This book serves as the basis for the gatherings and discussions led by Meshullam. The exhibition title,\u00a0<strong>All of the Gifts<\/strong>, alludes to the contents of the box entrusted to the mythological Pandora, who name literally means Pan (all) Dora (gifts). Pandora did not obey Zeus\u2019 commandment to keep the box locked. When she opened it, she freed every sort of trouble and calamity that continue to plague the human race.\u00a0<strong>All of the Gifts\u00a0<\/strong>also alludes to the offerings made to the gods, which were perceived in the ancient world as human gifts.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is described in the work as a primeval existential state going back to the Garden of Eden. The biblical story, a cultural and religious cornerstone, is charged with countless meanings and interpretations. In this case, it is related to the city of Tel Aviv, which is identified by two iconic architectural symbols: the minaret of the Hassan Bek Mosque and the chimney of the Reading Power Station, which rises 150 meters over the Tel Aviv skyline.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">These two architectural landmarks represent a charged history. The Hassan Bek mosque was built in 1913 by Hassan Bek, the military governor of Jaffa, to block the growth of the nascent Tel Aviv. The Reading Power Station was named after the British Jew and Zionist activist Daniel Isaacs, the Marquess of Reading . It was built in 1937 following the growing demand for electricity in Tel Aviv, as well as due to the damage to electric lines caused during the Arab Revolt (1936\u20131939).<br \/>The exhibition title, \u201cThe Book of Twins,\u201d allows for a consideration of this work as external to the biblical canon, yet still bearing an affinity with it. Bokobza\u2019s \u201cCreation\u201d combines biblical myths and scientific theories. The protagonists of this work are the split figure of the twins, who first appear in the Garden of Eden and lead to the second part of the work, \u201cDestruction.\u201d At this point, the animation work takes on a biting local character, far from any sort of idyll: we observe the events in Tel Aviv and Gaza and are immersed, by means of the sounds and narrative, in a painfully familiar state of local warfare. In contrast to the work\u2019s innocent, optimistic opening part, the end allows for no possibility of either a shared life or separate lives. The utopian creation reaches its dystopian end.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This animation work was inspired by two opera arias, which are both heard within the gallery: The first aria is \u201cLascia ch\u2019io pianga\u201d (Let me weep) by Georg Friendrich H\u00e4ndel, from the 1711 opera Rinaldo, which tells the story of a woman trapped in a palace garden in Jerusalem in the time of the crusades, who is lamenting her fate. The second aria is Antonio Vivaldi\u2019s \u201cGelido in ogni vena\u201d (My blood is frozen in my veins), from the 1727 opera Farnace, which tells of a father who kills his son with his own hands. Bokobza\u2019s work creates an appearance of compatibility \u2013 at once uplifting and harrowing \u2013 between the musical score, the gestures and movements of the human figures, the natural world and the weapons of destruction.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Bokobza\u2019s bold palette and na\u00efve style form a sort of honey trap, which captivates the hearts of viewers while striking us at our most vulnerable. Bokobza confronts us with acute concerns related to the Israeli present. Beyond his use of local ingredients and reference to themes and motifs from the history of Israeli art, his materials and technique \u2013 which includes painting on rice paper and silk fans \u2013 allude to the history of art more generally.
